Hair Health Therapy

As we age, our hair does as well, and a telltale sign of aging is hair loss and thinning. Your hair plays an important role in your appearance and self confidence. Hair loss and thinning can lead to frustration, loss of confidence and embarrassment. At R+H Aesthetic Medicine, our team of caring providers understand the many ways hair loss and thinning hair can impact your life. Using Exosomes or Autologous Growth Factors (AGF) we can now address hair loss on the cellular level.

Does exosome and AGF Hair Health Therapy work for men and women?

  • Yes!

How many treatments are recommended?

  • For optimal results a series of 4 treatments performed 4 weeks apart followed by 1 treatment every 3-4 months for maintenance is recommended.

Is there downtime following the procedure?

  • No. You may experience soreness of the scalp for a day or two. No restrictions are required following treatment.

Is the treatment painful?

  • For your comfort, ProNox Nitrous Gas is provided with your exosome or AGF treatments. This provides pain relief and wears off in 10 minutes and you can drive home.

When will I see results?

  • Results can be seen in approximately 3 months (you are growing hair which takes time). New hair growth can continue over the course of a year, with most noticeable results at 6 months. First you will see increased thickness of hair, then more hair follicles and number of hairs per follicle.

How can I optimize my results?

  • We recommend Nutrafol, a medical grade hair growth supplement to be used with exosome or AGF treatments for hair health. We offer men and women specific Nutrafol supplements at our office. These can also be purchased on our website under Products.

*For the above treatments, individual results may vary. Optimal results seen when combined with a complete, comprehensive skin care program. Multiple sessions may be part of a treatment plan.

Exosome and Autologous Growth Factor Therapy

What are Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny extracellular vesicles (tiny bubbles) that are naturally produced by stem cells. These vesicles carry messages and essential cargo such as proteins, growth factors, mRNA, and cytokines which are responsible for cell-to-cell communication, thus telling the cells what to do. Studies suggest that the body already has the cells that are needed to repair, but that these cells require proper signaling to function optimally. Exosomes provide that signaling, thereby telling cells when and how to behave.

Are Stem Cells and Exosomes the same?

No. In simple terms, exosomes are derived from stem cells.

Stem cells contain genetic material and can become any type of cell within the body. They serve as building blocks and repair the body.

Exosomes are tiny sacs or bubbles, called extracellular vesicles, which are released by all types of cells in the body, including, but not not exclusively, from stem cells. Exosomes carry important messages and signals such as growth factors to other cells. Exosomes carry 3 times the growth factors than stem cells.

In contrast to stem cells, exosomes are acellular and can not self-replicate, eliminating concerns about potential tumor formation.

What is the difference between Autologous Growth Factors (AGF) and Exosomes?

  • AGF are derived from your blood. Exosomes are laboratory derived from donor tissue.
  • AGF requires a blood draw, exosomes do not.
  • Both contain growth factors or signals that tell your cells how to behave.
  • Exosomes have 30-100x more growth factors than AGF, and thus are more potent.
  • AGF potency depends on your age and various other factors including health status, stress, environmental factors, medications, and is not always predictable, AGF potency declining with age.

Are Exosomes FDA approved?

  • No

Who is not a candidate for Exosomes?

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • History of skin cancer within the past 5 years

How are the exosomes processed, and are they safe to use?

We use exosomes which are procured and processed in the United States according to standards and regulations established by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB), and the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA). All of the donors are in the United States.

Can the patient take NSAIDS or other anti inflammatories?

No. It is ideal for the patient to stop taking NSAIDS 7 days prior to the exosome treatment and for 3 weeks after. NSAIDS will NOT destroy the exosomes but they can potentially lessen the effects. Other anti inflammatories to avoid include antihistamines (Benadryl, allergy medications), and supplements that are anti inflammatory (turmeric, fish oils). If you need a pain reliever, Tylenol is recommended.

How are Exosomes used in Aesthetic Medicine?

Exosomes are gaining attention in the field of aesthetic and cosmetic medicine due to their potential regenerative and rejuvenating properties. The use of exosomes in this context primarily revolves around their ability to promote tissue repair, stimulate collagen production, enhance skin health, and stimulate hair growth.

Here's a closer look at their use in aesthetic and cosmetic medicine:

  • Skin Rejuvenation: Exosomes derived from stem cells or other cell types can be utilized to enhance skin rejuvenation. When applied topically or injected into the skin, exosomes can promote the production of collagen and elastin, which contribute to improved skin texture, elasticity, and firmness. They may also help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and scars.
  • Wound Healing: Exosomes have regenerative properties that can aid in wound healing. They promote the migration, proliferation, and differentiation of skin cells, thereby accelerating the healing process and minimizing scar formation. Exosomes may also modulate inflammation and enhance tissue regeneration in the treated area. (decreases healing time of aesthetic procedures)
  • Hair Restoration: Exosomes have shown potential in stimulating hair growth and combating hair loss. When applied to the scalp or injected into the hair follicles, they can promote the proliferation of hair follicle cells, improve blood circulation, and nourish the hair follicles. This may lead to thicker, healthier hair and reduced hair loss.
  • Pigmentation Disorders: Exosomes have been studied for their potential role in treating pigmentation disorders, such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. They can help regulate melanin production and promote a more even skin tone by modulating the activity of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes).

What kind of exosomes do we offer?

Exosomes are extracted from stem cells which are derived from donor tissue in a laboratory. The donor tissue has been screened and tested for all diseases, is derived from non-vaccinated tissue, and abides by strict FDA and AATB (American Association of Tissue Banks) standards for tissue donation. We offer two different types of exosomes, one specific for skin rejuvenation, and one more selective for hair restoration.

  • Exosomes for Skin Rejuvenation: These exosomes are derived from dermal fibroblasts from infant foreskin. Dermal fibroblasts are cells within the dermis layer of the skin and are responsible for generating connective tissue and allowing the skin to recover from injury. These exosomes are skin specific and trigger or signal the production of collagen and elastin, a connective tissue which gives skin its firmness, plumpness and tightness. These can also help remodel scars, improve pigmentation, improve pore size and skin texture.
  • Exosomes for Hair Restoration: These exosomes are from Wharton jelly derived mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cord blood. These exosomes are more specific for hair restoration. These are injected into the scalp and have been shown to promote healthier, stronger hair follicles and may stimulate hair growth in both men and women.

Exosomes for Skin Rejuvenation highlights

  • Derived from Dermal Fibroblast Stem Cells from infant foreskin (skin and collagen specific)
  • Can be used topically after skin rejuvenation (Morpheus8) or injected into area of concern (under eye or around the mouth)

Medical Injectables

What is the downtime and recovery time expected with Dermal Filler?

It is common to experience swelling and bruising following dermal filler procedures. The majority of swelling and bruising resolves within a week, but it can take up to a full two weeks for some bruises to heal. We recommend scheduling your dermal filler procedure at least two weeks from any important events to allow for healing. As dermal filler is an implant complete healing can take 6-8 weeks, but most swelling and bruising will resolve in the first 2 weeks.

What can I do to minimize bruising and swelling associated with Dermal Filler and Medical Injectable procedures?

To minimize bruising and swelling we recommend the following: discontinue any anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, Aleve, aspirin, Motrin, Advil, turmeric, fish oils, Vitamin E, other supplements) 7 days before your injectable procedure, avoid alcohol for 2 days prior to your procedure, avoid caffeine or stimulants for a few hours before your procedure. Additionally, you may use Arnica tablets the evening before and the morning of your procedure to help minimize bruising.

What are the requirements for Dermal Filler procedure?

As Dermal Filler is an implant, we need to be very clean and cautious with these procedures to prevent infection and complications. Your safety is our number one priority. The following is required for medical clearance for treatment with Dermal Fillers:

  • No dental work, including cleanings, 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after your scheduled Dermal Filler procedure
  • No vaccines, of any kind, 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after your scheduled Dermal Filler procedure
  • No long distance travel or air travel for the the first 48 hours after your Dermal Filler procedure
  • If you have a special event, please schedule at least 2 weeks before or after your event to allow for healing of bruising and swelling
  • If you have any active or currently are being treated for any autoimmune disorder or disease we may not be able to treat you, please consult the office before scheduling
  • No active infections of any kind, skin lesions in the area to be treated, on current antibiotics, steroids, or blood thinning medications
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding we are unable to treat you
  • If you have a history of oral herpes or cold sores, please alert our office prior to you appointment so that we can prescribe an anti-viral medication for you
  • Age 21 or older for Dermal Filler treatment

*For the above treatments, individual results may vary. Optimal results seen when combined with a complete, comprehensive skin care program. Multiple sessions may be part of a treatment plan.

During your consultation we will take extra time with you to answer all your questions. Below is a list of the most frequently asked questions by our patients.

It is an effective treatment for acne scarring and striae/stretch marks. It can also be used for cessation of hyperhidrosis (underarm sweating). Morpheus8’s color blind technology allows it to be used on all skin types, even darker skin tones. For best results, 1-6 treatments are recommended*.

*This may be used in conjunction with Autologous Growth Factor Therapy (platelet rich plasma) for accelerated healing and collagen stimulation.

What areas can be treated?

  • Face, neck, hands, underarms (excessive sweating), breasts, abdomen, arms, or any body area needing lifting, tightening or resurfacing.

How many treatments will you need?

  • One to six treatments, 4 to 6 weeks apart.

What is the downtime?

  • Two to ten days depending on skin quality and treatment area. You will keep the area moist with post treatment ointment for 2-3 days after your procedure. Most patients experience redness that resolves after a few hours. Some patients experience small scabs. Rarely patients experience bruising.

How can you prepare for your treatment?

  • Avoid antihistamines, Aspirin, NSAIDs (such as Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve) one week prior to treatment. Also avoid Vitamin E, fish oils, Ginkgo Biloba, as these negate the effects of the treatment. The body’s inflammatory responses are needed post treatment.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, niacin supplement, spicy foods, and cigarettes three days prior to your treatment as all these may increase your risk of bruising.
  • Stop laser hair removal, electrolysis, waxing, depilatory creams one week prior to creams.
  • Stop retinols one week prior to treatment.
  • It is recommended, if you have a special event or vacation coming up that you schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks in advance.

What can you expect the day of your treatment?

  • Most treatments depending on area take approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. The area to be treated is numbed with a topical numbing medication for one hour. In addition you may use ProNox to make your treatment more comfortable. The actual treatment time of procedure is depending upon area, fifteen minutes to one hour. After Morpheus8 is completed a post procedure ointment will be applied to keep the area moist. You will be able to drive yourself home after your treatment.

How can you optimize your treatments for the best outcome?

  • Hydrate by drinking 8-10 glasses of water the day before and the day of your treatment.
  • Exosome or Autologous Growth Factor Therapy can be added to your procedure to increase collagen production and optimize your outcome.
  • Adhere to a healthy skin regimen, wearing sunblock and avoiding long periods of sun exposure.

What are the results that you can expect?

  • While most results vary from patient, most find that their skin looks and feels tighter, firmer and more radiant immediately. However, results continue to improve over 3-6 months as the effects of growing new collagen is seen.

How long can you expect your results to last?

  • Results are variable from patient to patient with most experiencing improvement up to two years. As you will continue to age and lose collagen and elastin, a maintenance radio frequency treatment, i.e. Forma/Forma Plus, is recommended every three to four months to maintain results.

*For the above treatments, individual results may vary. Optimal results seen when combined with a complete, comprehensive skin care program. Multiple sessions may be part of a treatment plan.

As dermal filler is an implant complete healing can take 6-8 weeks, but most swelling and bruising will resolve in the first 2 weeks.
