Katie’s journey begins when her family escaped the war-torn devastation of Vietnam. Fleeing on a boat in search of safety, they became “boat people,” risking everything and enduring harrowing conditions to reach the Philippines. Her mom was pregnant during this journey, carrying Katie’s younger brother while protecting her two young daughters. After a year in a refugee camp, they were sponsored to come to the United States. Katie, just four years old when they arrived in America, doesn’t remember the journey, but its weight lives within her. “My parents left everything behind for us,” Katie shares. “They risked their lives to give us a chance, and that chance is something I carry with me every day.”
Starting over in a foreign land was no small feat. Katie’s father worked as a custodian, taking on side jobs like recycling paper to make ends meet. Katie remembers sitting in the back of his truck as a little girl, sorting paper by color to help him earn a few extra dollars. Her mother took up sewing and later transitioned to working in a nail salon, eventually becoming a successful business owner.
"My parents worked tirelessly," Katie recalls. "They started with nothing, and they built a life for us. Watching them sacrifice so much taught me that no dream is too big if you’re willing to work for it."
From Challenges to Triumph
Katie’s road to becoming a nurse practitioner and co-owner of R+H Aesthetic Medicine was far from linear. As a teenager, she struggled academically and took a winding path that included a successful stint in real estate. But something was missing. “I realized I didn’t want to spend my life chasing money. I wanted to do something meaningful,” she says. Inspired by nurses she met as clients, Katie discovered her true calling: blending compassionate patient care with the artistry of aesthetic medicine.
Inspired by the transformative power of aesthetic medicine, Katie pursued her education with unwavering determination, advancing from LVN to RN and ultimately earning the distinguished title of NP-BC (Nurse Practitioner, Board-Certified). Balancing work, school, and motherhood, Katie exemplified the resilience and perseverance she had witnessed in her parents, becoming a highly accomplished and respected professional in her field.
The Pink Stethoscope and a Lasting Bond
Katie’s journey with Dr. Young began with a moment that still makes her laugh to this day. On his first day at urgent care, where they met in 2016, the highly accomplished and respected physician approached her with a humble request: “Do you have an extra stethoscope?” Katie, without hesitation, handed him her spare—a bright pink one. “He didn’t even blink,” she recalls with a grin. “He used it all day like it was the most professional tool in the world.” That moment marked the start of a professional partnership and personal admiration that would span years. Katie often credits Dr. Young not only for his brilliance as a doctor but for his unwavering support and mentorship, which she says gave her the courage to reach for her dreams. "He believed in me before I did, and his ability to lead with both vision and humor has shaped so much of who I am today."

In 2023, Katie achieved a career milestone by opening the West Sacramento location of R+H, becoming its co-owner and a pillar of the local community. "West Sac isn’t just where I work—it’s where my family lives, where we’re raising our daughters, and where I’m dedicated to making a difference," Katie shares.
Her parents, who sacrificed so much for her future, stood proudly at the grand opening. Their tears of joy were a testament to how far their family had come. "Seeing the pride in their eyes meant everything to me," Katie says. "This wasn’t just my dream—it was theirs too."
Alongside her parents stood Katie's husband, Aaron, who was equally emotional and proud. An incredible father and her greatest support, Aaron’s steadfast encouragement and partnership have been a cornerstone of her journey.
